Radar the Weather Dog – A Shelter Success Story

When The News on 6 decided to add a  Weather Dog to their family, they wanted to make sure of two things:  1) that they found a dog who needed to be rescued and 2) that the dog they rescued would truly enjoy going places and meeting people.  News on 6 went to Tulsa Animal Welfare to find the next member of their crew.

With a professional dog trainer in tow, they found many beautiful, friendly dogs that day but the sweet little Beagle mix sitting on his little blue bed in the kennel won their hearts. “He was trying for all he was worth to interact with me.   Such a sharp mind!,” said Susanne Shelton, the trainer. “He was an astute observer of me and drew me in by his amazing ability to notice what behavior he was doing that got me to look at him. He would then offer that behavior again to see if it worked a second time — just genius!  To see this ability in this young pound puppy was amazing.”  That was all the confirmation News on 6 needed to know that this little guy was a dog who would love the big adventure of meeting people and spreading the word about weather safety. And they were right!

Radar the Weather Dog has been a member of the News on 6 family for almost a year.  He and the rest of the Weather Team travel around Green Country and present  “Trav’s Wild Weather Camp” to elementary and middle school students, during storm season.  Chief Meteorologist Travis Meyer, with Radar by his side, has taught thousands of kids how to be safe during flooding, thunderstorms and tornados. Radar and his trainer, Susanne Shelton are regular guests on Six in the Morning promoting pet health and safety.  Radar also represents the News on 6 at community sponsored pet events and is a wonderful ambassador for all rescued pets.
